This beautiful set of five wooden Russian nesting dolls is painted in
a traditional style, with bright blue, white and metallic gold
colouring. The faces on these little women are so lovely, with lots of
eyelashes and bright blushing cheeks. The largest doll stands only 9cm
tall and, as you can see from the photographs, each doll has been
painted with great skill and superb attention to detail. These are
authentic Russian dolls, with each unique set being hand-painted by
artists in Russia, and are sure to be treasured by their new owner for
years to come!
A Brief History of Matryoshka Dolls
Nesting dolls are the best known and most popular of all Russian
souvenirs. The Russian word for these wooden dolls is "matryoshka",
but they are also known as babushka, baba (grandmother) or stacking
dolls. In provincial Russia before the revolution, the name Matryona
or Matriyosha was a very popular female name. It was derived from the
Latin root 'mater' which means 'mother'. This name was associated with
the image of a mother of a big family who was very healthy and had a
portly figure. Subsequently, it became a symbolic name and was used to
describe brightly painted wooden dolls made in such a way that they
could be taken apart to reveal smaller dolls fitting inside one
another. The first Russian Doll set was made in 1890 and since then
the craft has evolved to encompass a variety of designs, from the
traditional to the contemporary.
This is a brand new and authentic set of Russian Dolls which will make
an ideal gift for that special someone ... or simply to add to your
own collection!

Postage & Packaging will be $6.00 within Australia, with Registered
Post available at an (optional) additional cost of $2.35.
International shipping costs will be AU$18.00 worldwide. I am more
than happy to combine shop purchases and auction wins within a 7 day
period and will always use the most economical postage method
available. Please feel free to email me at any time for a quotation on
combined postage costs.
Australian Bidders: Payment by direct deposit is preferred, with the
option of using either a Bendigo Bank or a Commonwealth Bank account.
Australia Post money orders and personal/business/bank cheques
(cleared before shipping) are also accepted.
International Bidders: Payment must be made via either PayPal or
PayMate only. All major credit cards can be accepted using either of
these payment options.
Payment Terms: Contact to be made within 3 days of end of auction and
payment within 10 days, unless otherwise arranged before auction end.
Items will be shipped within 3 business days of receiving payment
(usually sent the same day). Feel free to email me with any questions
prior to bidding and I will endeavour to answer them within 24 hours.
Returns & Refunds: Please read all of the above information carefully.
I will cheerfully (and most apologetically!) offer a full refund or
replacement if the item you receive is faulty or different than
described - but not if you misread (or didn't read) the listing, or if
you simply change your mind. Refunds will only be given upon return of
the item within 7 days of your receiving it. And, of course, your
return postage costs will also be refunded if item is found to be
faulty or incorrectly described. Please don't hesitate to ask any
