Gundam Seed
In Brief:
It is the year Cosmic Era 70. Mankind has already
begun itâs emigration into space, but mankind is divided. On one
side are the Coordinators, humans born with superior physical and
mental capabilities due to genetic manipulation. On the other side are
Naturals, or normal humans. As tensions between Earth and Plant (Plant
is the name of both the nation formed by the coordinators and to the
actual space colonies built by the coordinators) became greater, both
sides began preparing for the worst...
In Detail:
The naturals of
Earth formed the Earth Alliance, an army consisting of most of
Earths nations. The tensions exploded into full warfare following
the Earth Allianceâs attack that destroyed the Plant of Junis 7 with
a nuclear weapon. Plant was outraged, and quickly formed their own
army, the Zodiac Alliance of Freedom Treaty or ZAFT. ZAFT retaliated
by bombarding the Earth with Nutron-Jammers (or N-Jammer,) devices
that bury themselves into the Earths crust and emit waves that cancel
out all nuclear energy. Not only did this cripple the nuclear reactors
of most of the EAâs mobile weapons, but it neutralized all of the
power plants, causing worldwide power shortages and sending the whole
planet into chaos. ZAFT quickly launched an invasion of Earth while
the E.A. was crippled. Most people still believed the E.A. would win
in a short time due to their greater numbers. This was not to be the
case, as the superior nature of the coordinator quickly became
apparent. Their main advantage was their technology, namely the
humanoid combat vehicle called the Mobile Suit. Even
though it was faster, more maneuverable and more versatile than a
battleship, far more powerful than the more conventional combat
vehicles called mobile armors, itâs main advantage was it was
battery powered as opposed to nuclear powered like the E.A.âs units
and could operate in the n-jammerâs field. The far outnumbered ZAFT
forces managed to force the war to a stalemate. It has now drawn on
for eleven months. This is where the series begins. In the space colony
of Heleopolis, part of the neutral kingdom known as Orb, everything is
about to take on a new course that will decide the outcome of the war.
Even though Orb is neutral, it has been secretly developing weapons
for the E.A. ZAFT launches an attack to try to steal the five
prototype mobile suits which will later be called Gundams. Designed to
counter the ZAFT mobile suits, the prototypes are equipped with Phase
Shift Armor, making them almost invulnerable to conventional weapons.
A young boy named Kira Yamato becomes
entangled in the battle and manages to prevent ZAFT from claiming the
fifth Gundam and the EAâs new carrier ship, the Archangel. In a
turn of fate it is actually Kiraâs childhood friend, Athrun Zala, he
saves the Gundam from. You see, Kira himself is a coordinator. Now
Kira must decide weather or not to pilot the GAT X-105 Strike Gundam
to fight his own people and friend in a war that will forever change
humanity. This is the first Gundam of the new millennium and proof
that the franchise is still strong after more than two
decades. Incorporating not only the original Gundam, but also elements
of Zeta Gundam and Gundam Wing, Seed offers a lot. The story is
complex and takes some radical shifts. It is a return to the classic
war drama that was the hallmark of the franchise for so long. It has
the classic moral ambiguity and the line between good guy/bad guy is
very blurry indeed. It does a good job of leaving the viewer wondering
which
side is really right. There is a fair amount of politics involved in
the storyline as well. The action is fantastic with battles almost
every episode. The mechanical designs are solid and the mobile suits
are the best of the last few series made. The cast is also very good
with some interesting characters on both sides from the delicate and
seemingly naive Lacus Clyne to the bigoted Fllay Alister. It even
includes the masked villain theme of both the original Gundam and
Gundam Wing. Fans of the original Gundam and other UC Gundam series
will also note the presence of Haro, the robot (actually a lot of
multicolored Haroâs.) The soundtrack likewise is exceptional and
even rivals 1998âs Turn A Gundam (composed by Yoko Kanno.) This has
turned into one of my favorite series of the past two or three years
and is an exceptionally solid addition to the Gundam franchise.
