Diamond Buying Guide
The quality and price of a diamond is determined by it’s weight
(carats), cut, clarity and colour. These factors are known as the “4
C’sâ€. In order to make a sound purchase, it is important to
understand these criteria. The following information provides a brief
outline of diamond grading to assist you with making your purchase.
Carat
Diamond weight is measured in carats. One carat equals 0.2 grams, or
200 milligrams. The larger the diamond, the more expensive.
Cut
Cut is often used to refer to the shape. More accurately, cut refers
to the proportions of the diamond.
Colour
In general, the absence of colour in a diamond is valued, with the
exception of “fancy†coloured diamonds which are rare and may
consist of all the colours of the rainbow. Generally, diamond colour
is graded according to the chart below, with D coloured diamonds being
the most rare and expensive. In practical terms, it is difficult to
tell the difference between J or K for instance.

Clarity
Clarity refers to the diamonds perfection. Imperfections in a diamond
may consist of natural inclusions of various minerals inside the
diamond or blemishes on the surface of the diamond. Clarity is graded
according to the chart below.

Classic "Four C's of Diamond"
----every buyer should consider before that all important diamond
purchase
1. CUT
Of the 4C's, the cut is the aspect most directly influenced by diamond
cutter. The other three are dictated by nature. Two of the most widely
used criteria to measure the cut are Shape and Proportions.
Shape refers to the inherent shape of the diamond. Among the most
common shapes available on the market are the round cut, the marquise,
the pear shape, the oval, the princess cut, the emerald cut and the
heart shape cut. Well cut diamonds reflect the maximum amount of
light, through the diamond from one mirror-like surface to another,
dispersed through the top of the stone. Diamonds cut too shallow or
too deep lose light that disappears through the side or bottom. A
poorly proportioned diamond is less brilliant and spectacular and thus
less valuable.

2. CLARITY
A diamond's clarity is determined by the number, nature, position,
size and color of internal characteristics called "inclusions" and
surface features called "blemishes". The clarity of a diamond is
graded by using 10X magnification under good lighting by an
experienced grader. The final clarity grade is usually determined by
how easy the inclusions and blemishes are for the grader to see.

3. COLOR
The beauty of diamonds depends entirely upon their remarkable optical
properties. Though most diamonds appear to be icy-white, the fact is
that most diamonds have slight traces of color, usually yellow or
brown. The most valuable is no color, or colorless, due to its rarity.
With each subtle departure from colorless, there is a decrease in
rarity and value. The GIA color grades range from D (colorless) all
the way to Z (yellow-brownish). The exceptions to the rule are "Fancy"
diamonds in well-highlighted colors that include pink, blue, red,
green, and canary yellow. These are particularly rare and much sought
after.

4. CARAT
Carat weight is the standard unit of weight for diamonds. One carat
equals 0.2 gram, or 0.007 ounce. Larger diamonds are rarer, and
therefore tend to be more valuable. However, size often is the least
important factor in determining a diamond's ultimate value.
